You need to learn to draw without the crutch of someone else’s composition or flattening of space. No drawings from published images (plagiarism) or personal photographs.

Use pencils, pens, crayons, sticks, charcoal, burnt matches, makeup, tea, coffee, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, pine straw, fingers, basically anything that will make a mark.

Collage them, combine them, layer them, draw on them, paint with them, change their backgrounds, etc. If you tend more toward photography, use your photos creatively.

The best moments for sketchbook work often arise quickly, and are often fleeting. It should go without saying that the book should be with you as often as possible. Such conceptual variety can be demonstrated through either the use of one or the use of several media. The course teaches students a variety of concepts and approaches in drawing, 2-D design, or 3-D design so that the students are able to demonstrate a range of abilities and versatility with technique, problem solving, and ideation (i.e., “breadth”). Don’t invite criticism unless you are confident that it won’t derail your free spirit. You don’t need negative feedback when you are trying out new ideas or experimenting. Avoid showing your work to others unless you know they are going to understand what you are trying to do in your sketchbook. Expect your ideas about what makes good art to be challenged.ġ0. Don’t just paste on pictures of what you like. Again, try to avoid obvious, un-creative solutions. Use the cover to make a visual statement about who you are, what makes you unique and creative. Which really reflect YOU as a person/artist? Go beyond the obvious collage of pictures of you and your friends. Think about the font(s) that you have available. Cut out letters from magazines, newspapers, junk mail, and computer printouts work great. Your name needs to be CLEARLY and thoughtfully incorporated into the composition of the cover. Your altered book cover needs to reflect you, the user and creator of the book. Any extra time you need for the cover must happen on your own time. You may use any materials available in the classroom. You will have two days at the beginning of school to personalize your altered book’s cover. You may bring one from home, buy one at a thrift shop (get a bag of books for $1-$2 at The Clothes Tree), get an old discarded book from the Wamogo library, or use one from my collection.
